Sri Sathya Sai Music Festival – ‘Music for Peace’

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization, Palakkad conducted Sri Sathya Sai Music Festival – Music for Peace, on January 2nd and 3rd at Chembai Music College , Palakkad. This is the 13th year we are conducting this programme consecutively. The programme started with Pushparchana at Statue of Sri. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, at college entrance which was followed by inaugural function.



Welcome speech was given by Sri. Gopalakrishnan Master, Dist. Coordinator, SSSSO, Palakkad. The function was presided by District President SSSSO, Palakkad Sri. A.V. Suresh Kumar. The festival was inaugurated by Smt. Prameela Sasidharan, Municipal Chairperson of Palakkad Municipality, by lighting kuthu vilakku. Introductory speech and message was given by Sri. A.M. Prabhakaran, State Vice President, SSSSO, Kerala which was followed by release of a devotional CD named Sai Krishnamrithram sung by Smt. A.M. Shyamala, Kanjanghad.

The tile “Sangeetharathna” was given to Sri. Mangad Natesan Trichur, a well known carnatic musician of kerala. Felicitation was given by Mr. Dinesh, Cherthala, Principal Chembai Memorial Music College, Palakkad. This was followed by prize distribution to winners of Chess , Essay and Music competitions conducted earlier by SSSSO, Palakkad.

Cash price was given to Miss. Krishna Ravi, B.A. Music First Rank Holder from University of Calicut. Inaugural function came to an end with Vote of thanks by Sri. Kallekulangara Unnikrishnan, mridangist and an active worker of SSSSO, Palakkad.

Details of Programs – Day 1

Pancharathna Keerthanalapanam : The music festival began with Pancharathna keerthanalapanam by musiciains like Sri. Kanjangad Shankaran Nampoothiri, Sri. Payyanur Ramachandran, Sri. Vishnu Tharavath, Smt. Vijayambika. This session was accompanied on Violin by Sri. Rajamani and disciples. Sri. Dinesh Cherthala, Kallekulangara Unnikrishnan and Mr. Navaneeth Krishnan accompanied the programme on mridangam.


Pancharathna Keerthanalaapan was followed by a short music concert by students of Chembai Memorial Music College.

Afternoon sessions started at 2.15pm by carnatic music concert by Kumari . Aalila, a 7th standard student from Thriprayar which was followed by Sai Yuvajana Bhakthi Gana Sudha, a sai devotional music programme by Sai youth team, a team of state bhajan singers from palakkad.

Youth programme was followed by a carnatic music concert by Kum . Abhirami, a devotee of Sai, Thrissur which consisted of bhajans, abhangs and keerthans. Kum. Abhirami enthralled the audience by her mind boggling performance which was filled with devotion and bhavam.


Evening programme started by two classical dance performances by Kum Visakha Thrissur, and Smt. Revathy Vayalar.

The main music programme of the evening was carnatic vocal concert by veteran Sri. O.S. Thyagarajan. OST began his concert with a preface of Thodi to base his Varnam ‘Era Napai’. The jam packed hall reverberated with thunderous applause whenever O.S. Thyagarajan concluded his alapanas of Thodi or Kharaharapriya, as he revealed his extraordinary imaginative skill in presenting the respective ragas with a rare kind of brilliant sangatis.


OST had the excellent violin support of Sri T H Subramanyam. His was a faithful following, mirroring the vocalist’s manodharma in alapana, but he was on his own, when it came to niraval or swara sallies, without exceeding his limits. The concert acquired a special status, as the mridangam accompaniment was none other than Prof Cherthala Dinesh. It was, therefore, a bonus for the entire audience. None moved out of the auditorium during the tani avartanam.The moorsing accompaniment was Payyannur Sri. Govindaprasad. The nadham of the instrument was pleasing.

The programme of day 1 came to an end by Arathi .

Details of Programs – Day 2

Morning session started at 10.15am by Carnatic music concert by Gayaki Sisters, Smt. Shanthala and Smt.Sharmila from Thripunithura. Sri.Vikas accompanied them on Mridangam and Sri. Payyannur Govindaprasad on Mursing.


The second concert was by Dr. M S Parameswaran for which the violin accompaniment was Sri. Anoop Bhaskar, Prod. Cherthala Dinesh on Mridangam, Sri Thriprayar Sundar on Moorsing.


Afternoon session started with a 15mts violin concert by baby Annapoorni, First prize winner of Sri Sathya Sai Music Competition conducted in connection with Sai Music Festival which was followed by a discourse by Sri. P K Asokan, District In Charge of SSSSO Palakkad on the topic ‘Sangeethavum Samskaravum’. Afternoon session ended with a beautiful concert by Sri. Abhiram Unni, All India Radio ‘B high’ artist.

Evening session started with a vocal concert by Matangi Sathyamoorthi. The concert with adi tala varna ‘swami ninnekori’ followed by ‘varavallavararamana’ in raga Hamsadhwani, ‘marivere’ in raga lathangi and ‘marakaravalli’ in raga Kamboji. She was accompanied by Sri. Palghat Maheshkumar on Mridangam, Sri. Kalpathy Swaminathan on Violin and Sri. Payyannur Govinda Prasad on moorsing.

The final session was Kathakali by Gandhi Seva Sadanam, pathirippala. Sri. Sadanam Harikumar and team presented the story ‘Kuchelavritham’ which was magnificent and colorful.


The two days function, Sri Sathya Sai Music Festival, ‘music for peace’ came to an end by Maha mangala arathi followed by Prasadam distribution.
